Your Guide to Storm Door Hinging

After measuring your opening, you will need to decide if your door will be hinged on the right or the left.

LARSON storm doors will have either a universal hinge, are right hinged or left hinged. Let's explore what each of those terms mean.

Universal hinging is unique to many of our doors. The door can be hung to swing open from the left hinge or the right hinge. During Installation you decide if your door will be hinged on the right or the left. Please note, if you purchase a door that has universal hinging, you may need to use the provided template and drill bit to create an opening for your handleset.

Right hinged doors come with a pre-drilled opening for your handleset. The hinges are on the right of the door, when looking at the door from the outside.

Left hinged doors come with a pre-drilled opening for your handleset. The hinges are on the left of the door, when looking at the door from the outside of your home.

Hinging

So, how do you choose? It really is personal preference and only makes a difference during the installation process. Doors that come with universal hinging require a bit more prep upfront; however, after the door is installed, there is no difference between universal hinging and left or right hinging.

Doors that come either left hinged or right hinged are a bit easier to install, since the handleset hole has been pre-drilled in our factory and the hinge rail has been applied.

Please note, not all models are available with right or left hinging. Consult your local dealer for specific information.
